Welcome May!
Please download our May Newsletter (to the right) for important news, dates, and reminders! Thanks. :)
The first grade teachers appreciate your cooperation with helping our students foster independence, feel safe and cared for, and continue to develop friendships. Thank you for talking to and reminding your child of the following…
- Be sure to use the tools and strategies we learn about during Soul Shoppe: using an “I Message” and listening to each other so that we can work together to solve problems.
- Ask a friend to help you problem-solve and let a teacher and/or adult know if a problem is still unresolved.
- Please remind your child to keep his/her hands and feet to themselves so that we can be safe and help take care of others too.
- If your child provides you with information about an incident that concerns you, please contact your child’s teacher so we can work together in resolving the matter.
Philosophy
Welcome to First Grade! We are very excited to make this a positive, fun and educational year for your students. First grade is a busy year, where we lay the foundation for the rest of your child's education. A typical day in first grade consists of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. It may also include Art, Technology and Physical Education. Our curriculum has an emphasis on building reading and writing skills and strategies with the New York Reading and Writing Project. Wherever possible we attempt to use a thematic approach to integrate the skills in these areas. Curriculum content is guided by our district standards and benchmarks for each subject area.
